Every story has a beginning – this is ours...

Alastair Carrie was struck by a blinding flash of light – which isn’t such a good thing if you’re the pilot of a commercial jetliner. He needed a pair of sunglasses that allowed him to read the aeroplane’s instruments whilst being protected from the bright sunlight at 36,000 feet. They had to be light enough to be worn in comfort for several hours (especially under his headset) and have all the optical properties normally associated with heavy glass lenses.

It was an exasperated optician, looking at a table covered with top-of-the-range sunglasses, all of which Alastair had rejected, who first suggested that he might like to design his own.

And so began a three year adventure to design a pair of sunglasses that met Alastair’s exacting specifications. The initial focus was to create very high specification sunglasses for the aviation industry but we soon realised that what is good for aviation, would certainly be great for most sports and recreational uses.

We have combined the best technologies available, across a wide range of disciplines. We have also been lucky enough to accumulate some of the best advisors anyone could wish for including one of the leading names in the optical industry and several other excellent professionals in their fields. These include our award-winning product designer, Anthony Harrison-Griffin. Our manufacturing business partners are hand selected and we believe they really are the best available on the planet. All the people and companies with whom we do business really do strive to maintain innovative excellence in precision engineering and they take pride in their achievements.

We are almost ready to present our first collection – the product of hundreds of hours of testing in the skies above Europe – superbly designed titanium frames with the highest quality NXT® lenses and a level of fit, comfort and durability that is unsurpassed.

Aero Expo 2009

In June this year we were able to build up some early promotion for the Bigatmo collection at the London Aero Expo at Wycombe Air Park. The Bigatmo logo joined others on the Breitling sponsored MX2 race plane flown by Nigel Lamb in the Red Bull Air Race World Championships.
